Lake Charles Sex Offender Fails to Update Registration
LAKE CHARLES, La. – John L. Edwards, a 59-year-old resident of Lake Charles, has pleaded guilty to failing to update his sex offender registration, a crime that carries serious consequences.
According to court documents, Edwards was convicted of a sex-related offense in 2002 and sentenced to nine years in prison, with a requirement to register as a sex offender on a quarterly basis for life. However, Edwards failed to update his registration after moving from Texas to Lake Charles in June 2015, where he was residing illegally until his arrest on December 28, 2015.
The investigation into Edwards’ whereabouts began when the Dallas Police Department received a tip about his living in Lake Charles. A warrant was executed, and Edwards was arrested. During questioning, Edwards admitted to moving to Lake Charles from Dallas in June 2015, and it was discovered that his last registration was in Texas in June 2014.
Edwards faces up to 10 years in prison, five years to life supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. His sentencing date has been set for August 11, 2016.
The U.S. Marshals Service and Dallas Police Department conducted the investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Jamilla A. Bynog is prosecuting the case.
Edwards’ guilty plea is a stark reminder of the importance of sex offender registration and the consequences of failing to comply with the law. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that sex offenders are held accountable for their actions and that the community is protected.
Edwards’ case serves as a warning to all sex offenders that failing to update their registration will result in severe consequences, including imprisonment and fines.
