Two New Orleans Men Sentenced for Railyard Car Heists
A pair of New Orleans men have been sentenced for their roles in a string of car thefts from the Norfolk Southern Railyard.
MISTER MACKEY, JR., 22, and JONATHAN FRANK, 40, both of New Orleans, were sentenced on May 28, 2024, by U.S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey. The men pleaded guilty to charges arising out of a 20-count indictment.
The indictment alleged that MACKEY and FRANK stole two cars from the railyard and possessed firearms while committing the crimes. According to court documents, MACKEY was observed on surveillance video occupying a 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor Crew Cab 4×4 and a 2023 Lincoln Aviator that had been stolen from the railyard. On August 19, 2023, MACKEY was pulled over for a traffic violation and found to be in possession of a loaded handgun and marijuana.
FRANK was captured on surveillance video driving two Ford Explorer STs stolen from the railyard. He was also found to be in possession of a handgun while driving the stolen cars.
MACKEY was sentenced to 58 months in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and a $400 mandatory special assessment fee. The charges against MACKEY included possessing two cars stolen from the Norfolk Southern Railyard, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
FRANK received a sentence of 87 months in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and a $300 mandatory special assessment fee. He was convicted of possessing two cars stolen from the railyard and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. It was investigated by the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, the Louisiana State Police, and the New Orleans Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David Berman of the Violent Crime Unit.
The sentences handed down to MACKEY and FRANK mark the final chapters in a case that has been unfolding for nearly a year. The men’s actions not only put lives at risk but also caused significant financial losses for the victims.
