New ORLEANS – The gritty streets of New Orleans saw a new chapter in financial fraud as Amanda Cangelosi, age 39, was announced today by Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson to be indicted for conspiracy to make and pass counterfeit United States currency.
Cangelosi, the alleged mastermind, is accused of orchestrating the production of fake $100 bills, conspiring with others to dupe merchants out of real money. The scheme was elaborate – using genuine $1 bills as the foundation to create convincing replicas of the hundred-dollar notes, all in an attempt to pass off the forgeries as legitimate currency.
The indictment details Cangelosi’s alleged role in paying for a hotel stay at Metairie, LA, with three counterfeit $100 bills. The charges against her are severe: up to five years’ imprisonment if convicted of conspiracy and up to 20 years if found guilty of passing the counterfeit currency. A fine of up to half a million dollars looms over her, along with supervised release and mandatory fees.
Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson emphasized that an indictment is merely a charge and Cangelosi’s guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Despite the serious charges, the investigation was a testament to the combined efforts of the United States Secret Service and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The prosecution is led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tiwana Wright from the Financial Crimes Unit, who is determined to see justice served for this financial betrayal.
