New York Man Sentenced for Felonious Firearms Possession

TRENTON, N.J. – In a shocking display of disregard for the law, Jamal Williams, 41, of Bronx, New York, was sentenced to 110 months in federal prison for knowingly possessing two handguns despite being a previously convicted felon.

Williams, a repeat offender, had previously pleaded guilty to an information charging him with being a felon in possession of a firearm. U.S. District Judge Michael A. Shipp handed down the sentence in Trenton federal court.

According to documents filed in the case and statements made in court, law enforcement officers arrested Williams on November 11, 2014, in Trenton. Following a search of his residence and a storage unit he rented, authorities discovered two 9mm Ruger pistols and 16 rounds of ammunition. Williams’ rap sheet boasts convictions for narcotics trafficking and unlawful weapons possession felonies in both New Jersey and New York state courts.

Acting U.S. Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick praised the special agents with the DEA, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Valerie A. Nickerson in Newark, and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri, for their tireless efforts in investigating this case.

The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Molly Lorber of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Trenton. Defense counsel, David R. Oakley Esq., of Princeton, New Jersey, also played a significant role in the case.

Williams’ sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of breaking the law. As a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing firearms, and his actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the safety of his community.

In a statement, Acting U.S. Attorney Fitzpatrick emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions. ‘This sentence should serve as a warning to others who would consider similarly reckless behavior,’ he said.
