Michele Rene Muzyka, a 61-year-old nurse from Cheshire, Connecticut, has been sentenced for illegally distributing controlled substances to patients who didn’t need them. Between January 2024 and June 2025, Muzyka prescribed high doses of benzodiazepines and amphetamines to clusters of patients who appeared to know each other or were related. The prescriptions were often picked up by the patients themselves, with Muzyka charging $200 in cash for each office visit.
An undercover investigation revealed that Muzyka did not conduct medical examinations of certain patients and did not confirm conditions that would medically require treatment using these controlled substances. She even declined to accept a Medicaid plan from an undercover agent, instead charging a $200 cash fee. Medicaid ended up paying $287.58 for the unlawful prescriptions written for the undercover agent.
Muzyka’s actions were first reported by pharmacists in New Britain and Middletown, who noticed that she was prescribing high doses of controlled substances to related patients. The investigation determined that Muzyka unlawfully distributed amphetamines, such as Adderall, and benzodiazepines, such as Xanax and alprazolam, to individuals without a legitimate medical need.
Muzyka has been sentenced to one day of imprisonment, time already served, and three years of supervised release. She has also been ordered to pay a $25,000 fine and perform 100 hours of community service.
