In a major blow to the fentanyl trade, Marvin Alexander Portillo, a 29-year-old Dallas man, has been sentenced to over 12 years in federal prison for his role in trafficking the deadly opioid in the Eastern District of Texas. The sentencing came after Portillo pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl. The case against Portillo was built in June 2023, during a drug trafficking investigation involving the distribution of fentanyl-laced pills in the region.
According to court documents, Portillo admitted to being part of a conspiracy responsible for distributing at least 400 grams of a substance containing fentanyl in the Eastern District of Texas. This significant amount highlights the gravity of the offense and the danger it posed to the community. The investigation and subsequent sentencing are part of the Homeland Security Task Force’s efforts to combat transnational criminal organizations and eliminate the threat of fentanyl and other drugs.
The Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) is a comprehensive initiative aimed at dismantling criminal cartels, gangs, and human smuggling and trafficking rings. It places a special emphasis on investigating and prosecuting crimes involving children and utilizes all available tools to prosecute and remove violent criminal aliens from the United States. The HSTF’s work in this case demonstrates its commitment to addressing the complex issues surrounding drug trafficking and its dedication to protecting American communities.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew T. Johnson. The sentencing by U.S. District Judge Amos L. Mazzant, III, on March 31, 2026, marks a significant step in the ongoing battle against fentanyl trafficking in the Eastern District of Texas.
