Ohio Man Admits to $123,775 Gift Card Scam
An Ohio man has pleaded guilty to stealing over $123,000 in gift cards from his employer, Walmart in Moundsville, West Virginia.
Kenneth Werkau, 63, of Clarington, Ohio, admitted to one count of wire fraud, a charge that carries up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
According to court documents, Werkau stole the gift cards between September 2019 and January 2020, activating them without paying for them.
The case was investigated by the FBI and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Dane DeMasi-Lemon.
U.S. Magistrate Judge James P. Mazzone presided over the proceedings.
Werkau’s sentencing will be determined by the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account the seriousness of the offense and any prior criminal history.
The guilty plea marks a significant blow to Werkau, who faces a lengthy prison sentence and a substantial fine.
