OKLAHOMA CITY – Gaylen D. Stephens, 29, and Lenie E. Jennings, 29, have been sentenced to serve over 40 months in federal prison for their roles in a sophisticated stolen checks scheme, officials announced.
The duo, both from Oklahoma City, were accused of conspiring to steal and forge U.S. Mail checks between March 2023 and October 2023. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, they altered payee names on the checks and deposited them into bank accounts they created to cash out.
Stephens and Jennings attempted to steal approximately $277,000 during the scheme, according to authorities. Stephens pleaded guilty to bank fraud and admitted his fraudulent activities. Jennings pleaded guilty to bank fraud and conspiracy to commit bank fraud and forge checks, admitting her involvement in the plot.
The sentencing hearing on July 21, 2025, saw U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton impose sentences of 28 months for Stephens and 12 months and one day for Jennings. Both were also ordered to pay $177,964.74 in restitution. Judge Heaton emphasized that crimes like these undermine public trust in financial institutions and warranted severe penalties.
This investigation was conducted by the United States Postal Inspection Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jackson D. Eldridge handling the prosecution.
