Derek Michael James, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon with Intent to do Bodily Harm, Oklahoma 2025

MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – In a gritty turn of events, Derek Michael James, 41, from Durant, has entered a guilty plea to one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon with Intent to do Bodily Harm in Indian Country. The crime carries a severe penalty, up to ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma revealed that James’ assault on January 27, 2025, took place within Bryan County, on the Choctaw Nation Reservation. The violent crime has sparked a federal investigation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Choctaw Nation Lighthorse Police Department.

Judge Jason A. Robertson of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma accepted James’ plea and directed the completion of a presentence investigation report. The actual sentence will be determined by a U.S. District Court Judge, considering U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant factors.

James is currently in custody of the United States Marshals Service while awaiting sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jonathan E. Soverly and Patrick M. Flanigan represented the United States in this case.
