Courtney Derrell Bennett, a 54-year-old Omaha man, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon. The crime occurred in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where Bennett was arrested by the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force on an outstanding warrant for terroristic threats from Douglas County, Nebraska. At the time of his arrest, Bennett possessed a loaded revolver that had been reported stolen from an Omaha business just eight days prior. Bennett’s history of convictions, including escape from custody, attempted burglary, and robbery, made him a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
Bennett’s arrest was the result of a joint investigation by the United States Marshals Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and the Council Bluffs Police Department. The case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative to combat violent crime and make communities safer.
After serving his 10-year prison term, Bennett will be required to serve a three-year term of supervised release. The sentence was announced by United States Attorney David C. Waterman of the Southern District of Iowa.
