In a shocking case of sexual assault, Omar Afzali, 29, of Woodbridge, Virginia, was sentenced to eight years in prison for his role in the brutal attack on an incapacitated woman in 2016.
According to court documents, Afzali, along with his cousin, targeted the woman, who was intoxicated and unable to give consent, at a hotel in Northwest Washington. The victim, who had met Afzali after being unable to hail a cab after leaving a D.C. nightclub, was taken to the hotel by Afzali and left incapacitated in the hotel room.
Afzali, who pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree sexual abuse, admitted to engaging in sexual acts with the victim, including anal intercourse, while she was unable to decline or communicate her unwillingness to engage in sex. The victim had no recollection of the incident, but DNA analysis showed that Afzali’s DNA was on swabs taken of the victim’s intimate body parts.
After Afzali finished assaulting the victim, he left the hotel and contacted his cousin, telling him about the victim and how he had just had sex with her. Afzali’s cousin then went to the hotel room and engaged the victim in multiple acts of vaginal intercourse, while Afzali admitted to aiding and abetting his cousin’s assault.
U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu commended the work of the Sexual Assault Unit of the Metropolitan Police Department, the District of Columbia Department of Forensic Sciences, and other agencies that worked on the case. Afzali will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of sexual assault on victims and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
The Honorable Todd E. Edelman sentenced Afzali to eight years in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release. Afzali will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.
