Honduran Sentenced for Unlawful Re-Entry in Southern Illinois
Omar Oseguera-Cortez, 30, was sentenced to the time he has served in custody for the federal felony offense of re-entering the U.S. unlawfully after two previous deportations.
On March 16, 2015, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois Stephen R. Wigginton announced that Oseguera-Cortez was sentenced by a federal judge. Oseguera-Cortez admitted that he had been previously deported to Honduras in 2007 and 2009 after his change of plea hearing.
Oseguera-Cortez had served more than two months in custody prior to his sentence hearing. He was originally arrested by Madison County Sheriff’s deputies on January 6, 2015, for criminal damage to property. Oseguera-Cortez will now be remanded to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) for deportation.
The investigation which resulted in Oseguera-Cortez’s arrest and conviction was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Assistant United States Attorney Robert L. Garrison prosecuted the case.
Oseguera-Cortez is a Honduran national. At his change of plea hearing, Oseguera-Cortez admitted that he had been previously deported to Honduras in 2007 and 2009. His exact sentence was the time served in custody.
