LOS ANGELES – The grimy world of white-collar crime has again been marred as Joseph Neal Sanberg, a former co-founder and board member of Aspiration Partners Inc., faces a staggering 40 years in federal prison for his role in a $248 million fraud scheme.
The Orange County man, aged 46, was charged with two counts of wire fraud, each carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years. Sanberg has agreed to plead guilty to both counts, marking the culmination of an investigation that has spanned several years.
‘This so-called ‘anti-poverty’ activist has admitted to being nothing more than a self-serving fraudster, seeking to enrich himself at the expense of lenders and investors,’ said Acting United States Attorney Bill Essayli. ‘We commend our law enforcement partners for their efforts in this case and urge the investing public to remain vigilant against such predators.’
Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti echoed the sentiment, stating, ‘The Criminal Division is committed to pursuing and convicting fraudsters like Sanberg who cause significant harm to their victims and undermine our financial institutions.’
Eric Shen of the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) emphasized, ‘This defendant didn’t just bend the truth; he built a business on a lie. The Postal Inspection Service will go after this kind of calculated deception without exception.’
Assistant Director Jose A. Perez of the FBI Criminal Investigative Division noted, ‘Today’s guilty plea is a result of our commitment to hold those accountable who set out to defraud victims and undermine our financial system. The FBI will continue to work with partners to ensure such malicious behavior is investigated and stopped.’
According to court documents, Sanberg, beginning in 2020 and continuing into 2025, engaged in a scheme using his role at Aspiration to defraud various lenders and investors. He fraudulently obtained loans, falsified assets, concealed personal payments, and misled investors about the true financial health of the company.
