MEDFORD, Ore. – Gerald Thomas Schram, a 65-year-old repeat offender, was sentenced to 130 months in federal prison on Thursday, March 16, for his role in two brazen bank robberies. The judge also ordered Schram, of Medford, to pay $9,177 in restitution and serve three years of supervised release following his release from prison.
In January 2014, Schram donned a mask and hooded sweatshirt as he robbed a Minute Market in Medford, threatening staff with a gun and escaping with $605. Less than a year later, on September 29, 2014, the criminal struck again at a U.S. Bank, cycling away with $8,572 before being apprehended by police.
Based on DNA evidence found at the Minute Market, Schram was charged with both robberies in federal court. After a jury trial and a guilty plea, he now faces a decade-long sentence for his spree of violence against Oregon banks. His previous convictions include seven felony records from California and Oregon spanning from 1970 to 2014.
Assistant United States Attorney Jeffrey Sweet led the prosecution, with support from the Medford Police Department and the FBI’s Medford Resident Agency Office. Schram’s record of crime includes two prior federal prison sentences for bank robbery and robbery convictions, each lasting over a year.
This sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who prey on innocent citizens through violent means. The community of Medford now looks to rebuild after Schram’s reign of terror.
