Jason Raysean Broadbent, Assaulting Federal Agents, California 2015

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Jason Raysean Broadbent, a 38-year-old Sacramento resident, has pleaded guilty to a litany of serious charges including assaulting federal agents with a deadly weapon and possession of methamphetamine near a school. The shooting incident occurred on November 19, 2015, when federal agents were serving a search warrant at Broadbent’s girlfriend’s residence.

According to court documents, the agents were forced to break into the residence after no one answered their knocks. Moments later, Broadbent fired shots through a bedroom wall, narrowly missing law enforcement officers. He then escaped and pointed his Glock semi-automatic pistol at an ATF agent on the perimeter before being shot several times by that agent.

Upon searching the bedroom from which Broadbent had fired, authorities discovered almost two pounds of methamphetamine, a revolver, and a pipe bomb within a small safe. Broadbent was also found to have possessed firearms and the destructive device in violation of his previous felony convictions. He faced additional charges for possession of an unregistered short-barreled machine gun.

Law enforcement’s search at Broadbent’s own residence yielded another 2.5 pounds of methamphetamine, a loaded pistol, and two ghost gun AR-15 style rifles with conversion devices to become fully automatic firearms.

This case is the fruit of an extensive investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies including ATF, Sacramento Police Department, and DEA. Assistant U.S. Attorneys David Spencer, Justin Lee, and Nicole Vanek are leading the prosecution.

Broadbent is set for sentencing on October 23, 2025. He faces a maximum statutory penalty of life in prison and a $20 million fine, with a plea agreement suggesting a sentence of 50 years. The actual sentence will be determined by the court after considering all applicable factors.
