Orofino Man Caught with Gun in Pocket

A 23-year-old Orofino man has admitted to illegally possessing a firearm, despite being previously convicted of a felony. Stephen C. Walker pleaded guilty to the charge in a Coeur d’Alene court.

Walker was found with a .22 caliber firearm in his back pocket on October 29, 2014. Police had contacted him in an area that had been targeted by burglars the night before. The defendant was prohibited from owning a firearm due to his previous felony conviction for burglary.

Walker was indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2015. The case was investigated by the Orofino City Police Department, the Nez Perce Tribal Police, FBI, and ATF. It was prosecuted as part of Idaho’s Project Safe Neighborhoods Program, which aims to reduce gun violence in the state.

The charge of unlawful possession of a firearm is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, a maximum fine of $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release. Sentencing is set for May 10, 2016, before Senior U.S. District Judge Edward J. Lodge at the federal courthouse in Coeur d’Alene.

Walker’s guilty plea comes as a significant blow to gun crime in Idaho. The state’s Project Safe Neighborhoods Program has made significant strides in reducing gun violence, and this case is a testament to the efforts of law enforcement agencies in the state.

The case serves as a reminder that gun laws are in place for a reason, and those who break them will face the consequences. Walker’s sentence will be determined by Judge Lodge in May, and it is likely that he will face significant time behind bars for his crime.
