New York – The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has initiated a probe into the tragic shooting death of Miles Dignean, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a confrontation with the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) and the New York State Police (NYSP).
The incident unfolded on March 21, 2025, when OCSO and NYSP personnel were dispatched to a residence in Constantia, Oswego County, to conduct a welfare check and serve Dignean with an order of protection. The situation escalated into a struggle during which Dignean reportedly swung a metal object at officers, striking one in the head. In the midst of the altercation, an OCSO deputy discharged his service weapon, critically wounding Dignean.
Transported to a nearby hospital, Dignean was pronounced dead. The OSI, mandated by New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, now assesses every incident involving potential officer-induced death. This law extends to officers on-duty or off-duty and applies whether the decedent is armed, unarmed, in custody, or incarcerated.
The OSI investigation follows a mandatory procedure when an officer may have caused a fatality. If there is evidence suggesting such a cause, a thorough investigation of the incident ensues.
These initial facts are subject to change as the OSI delves into this troubling case.
