Michael Shawn Boaz, Health Care Fraud, Kentucky 2022

⏱ 2 min read

A pharmacist in Western Kentucky made a killing off his customers – not from saving lives, but from overcharging them for vitamins and prescriptions. Michael Shawn Boaz, 47, of Clinton, was sentenced to 30 months in prison for his role in a $2 million health care fraud scheme that spanned four years.

Boaz worked at two pharmacies in Kentucky, where he concocted a scheme to bill customers’ health insurance providers for boutique vitamins that were never ordered. He’d tell customers the vitamins were ‘free,’ but secretly billed them between $1,000 and $6,000 each.

Boaz also submitted fake prescriptions for the antihistamine carbinoxamine maleate, purchasing the medication for $605 and reselling it to health care providers for up to $16,000 a pop. The scheme caused $2.2 million in losses to health care providers from 2017 to 2021.

A co-conspirator, Christopher Clayton Augustus, pleaded guilty to charges related to the scheme in August 2025. He’s awaiting sentencing.
