Parmalee Man Jailed for Witness Tampering

BREAKING: 21-year-old Ian James Burning Breast, a Parmalee resident, has been sentenced to 15 years in custody for Witness Tampering and Supervised Release Revocation, according to the United States Attorney.

The 15-year sentence was handed down by U.S. Judge Roberto A. Lange on March 31, 2014, and Burning Breast will also serve five years of supervised release. Additionally, he was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Burning Breast was indicted for Witness Tampering by a federal grand jury on May 14, 2013. He pleaded guilty on January 13, 2014.

The case unfolded when Burning Breast was released from prison on November 12, 2012, for a previous crime and was required to comply with a term of court-ordered supervision. However, he returned to the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation and failed to adhere to the conditions of his release.

Things took a dark turn in January 2013 when Burning Breast allegedly sexually assaulted a relative. Following the assault, the victim reported the abuse, and Burning Breast was recorded on a phone call pressuring the relative to withhold information from law enforcement investigators.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher prosecuting the case. Burning Breast was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing.
