Tampa, Florida – Woman Sentenced to 8 Years in Prison for Stolen Identity Refund Fraud
A 29-year-old Pasco County woman has been sent to prison for her role in a massive identity theft and tax refund fraud scheme. Selathiel Frazier was sentenced to 8 years in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Susan C. Bucklew.
According to court documents, Frazier engaged in a scheme to defraud the United States government by participating in the filing of fraudulent tax returns and spending fraudulently-obtained tax refunds. Her crimes netted her over $4 million in ill-gotten gains.
The investigation into Frazier’s crimes revealed a shocking amount of evidence, including thousands of names and social security numbers, as well as cash, cars, and other proceeds of the scheme. Authorities recovered over $60,000 in cash, along with multiple vehicles.
Frazier pleaded guilty to wire fraud on March 26, 2014, and was subsequently sentenced to 8 years in prison. As part of her sentence, the court also entered a money judgment in the amount of $4,039,238.00, the proceeds of the charged criminal conduct.
The case was investigated by the Tampa Police Department, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation. Assistant United States Attorneys Amanda L. Riedel and Sara C. Sweeney prosecuted the case.
