Akeem Cornell Shaw, Controlled Substance Trafficking, Florida 2024

PENSACOLA, FLORIDA – Akeem Cornell Shaw, 39, of Pensacola, is staring down the barrel of a potential life sentence after pleading guilty to a laundry list of federal felonies. Shaw admitted to possessing with intent to distribute controlled substances, illegally possessing firearms while trafficking drugs, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and owning an unregistered short-barreled shotgun. The plea was announced by U.S. Attorney John P. Heekin for the Northern District of Florida.

The bust went down in February 2025, when law enforcement executed a search warrant at Shaw’s Pensacola residence. What they found wasn’t a simple stash – it was a full-blown operation. Officers discovered multiple loaded firearms, including the illegal short-barreled shotgun, alongside fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and enough ammunition to cause serious damage. Evidence also pointed to Shaw actively distributing the drugs, not just holding onto them.

This isn’t Shaw’s first rodeo. He’s a repeat offender with a prior conviction for Possession of Heroin with Intent to Sell. U.S. Attorney Heekin didn’t mince words, praising the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and federal partners for their work in bringing Shaw to justice. He also invoked the rhetoric of the previous administration, stating the prosecution is part of the commitment to “Take Back America” from criminals victimizing communities.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorney Jessica S. Etherton is prosecuting the case, indicating the seriousness with which the federal government is approaching this matter. Shaw’s history and the sheer volume of evidence suggest the government will push for the maximum penalty.

Shaw’s sentencing is scheduled for December 11, 2025, at 9:00 am at the United States Courthouse in Pensacola before United States District Judge T. Kent Wetherell, II. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison – a grim prospect for a man already familiar with the inside of a jail cell. The case falls under “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative aimed at dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations.
