Assault with Intent to Commit Murder Lands Navajo Nation Member Behind Bars
In a shocking turn of events, a Vangerwagon man has been charged with multiple federal firearms offenses and attempted murder in New Mexico. Perris Jeremiah Arthur, a 35-year-old enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, will remain in custody pending trial after appearing before a federal judge.
According to the indictment, on May 1, 2023, Arthur allegedly assaulted John Doe with a rifle with the intent to commit murder. If convicted of the current charges, Arthur faces up to 20 years in prison.
The case, which was investigated by the Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office with assistance from the Navajo Nation Department of Investigation and Department of Criminal Investigations, was announced by U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office.
Assistant United States Attorney Nicholas J. Marshall is prosecuting the case, which has not yet been scheduled for trial. An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, raising concerns about the prevalence of violent crime in the region. The Navajo Nation Department of Investigation and Department of Criminal Investigations have been working closely with federal authorities to bring those responsible to justice.
The FBI and Navajo Nation law enforcement agencies have been commended for their tireless efforts in solving this case, which is a testament to their commitment to keeping communities safe.
