Defendant Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter in New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE – In a shocking turn of events, Sheldon Carlton Daye, a 30-year-old resident of Vanderwagon, New Mexico, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with a deadly crash that occurred on Oct. 2, 2022.

According to the indictment, Daye, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, was operating a motor vehicle without due caution and circumspection, and with a wanton and reckless disregard for human life. The indictment alleges that his actions resulted in the deaths of John and Jane Doe.

The Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, with assistance from the Navajo Police Department and Department of Criminal Investigations, investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Probasco is prosecuting the case.

An indictment is only an allegation, and Daye is presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 16 years in prison.

The case has sent shockwaves through the community, with many calling for greater accountability on New Mexico’s roads. As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: the consequences of reckless driving can be devastating.

Daye will remain on conditions of release pending trial. The outcome of the case will be closely watched by residents of New Mexico and beyond.

In a statement, Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, said: “We take cases of reckless driving very seriously, and we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those responsible for such actions are held accountable.”
