Brian Garland, a 35-year-old from Riverdale, Georgia, and his co-defendants, Glenn McDowell and Octavious Franklin, traveled to Biloxi, Mississippi, where they broke into a pharmacy, stealing multiple types of controlled substances and several firearms. The heist occurred when two of the men smashed into the pharmacy, while the third acted as the getaway driver. The trio’s crime spree was ultimately foiled when they attempted to use the pharmacy owner’s stolen bank cards to purchase gas at an Alabama gas station. However, the cards didn’t work, and they were forced to use one of Garland’s debit cards instead. In a bizarre twist, they discarded the pharmacy owner’s wallet, which was later found by a good Samaritan. The wallet contained Garland’s debit card, which would become a crucial piece of evidence in identifying the suspects.
Surveillance footage from the gas station, combined with electronic evidence from multiple cell phones, tied Garland and his co-defendants to the pharmacy burglary. The footage also linked them to the crime based on their clothing. Garland was sentenced to 41 months imprisonment, while his co-defendants, McDowell and Franklin, received 169 months each. All three defendants were ordered to pay over $80,000 in restitution to the victims.
The sentences were handed down by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Mississippi, with the assistance of the Drug Enforcement Administration. The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat pharmacy burglaries and the theft of controlled substances.
