Fed-Up Feds Catch Philly Man Smuggling Smartphones to Inmates
A 24-year-old Philadelphia man has been caught and charged with throwing contraband into a federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut, according to court documents and statements from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Dana Erwin Taylor Jr. pleaded guilty to two counts of providing or attempting to provide contraband to an inmate of a federal prison on January 24, 2016, before U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea in Hartford. The crimes occurred in 2015.
On January 3, 2015, Taylor threw several bundles of contraband containing approximately 12 cell phones, along with batteries and chargers, over the perimeter fence of the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury. The bundles were wrapped in green camouflage fabric and clear tape.
On August 25, 2015, Taylor was stopped on the FCI Danbury grounds, next to the fence, in possession of a backpack containing 15 cell phones, along with batteries and chargers, eight bundles of synthetic marijuana, tobacco, and other items.
Taylor was caught with a stash of contraband that included 15 cell phones, batteries, chargers, synthetic marijuana, tobacco, and other items, all wrapped in green fabric and clear tape.
Taylor faces a maximum term of imprisonment of two years and a fine of up to $200,000. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 18, 2016.
The matter is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Anastasia King.
Dana Erwin Taylor Jr.’s brazen attempts to smuggle contraband into the FCI Danbury compound have raised concerns about prison security and the ease with which inmates can access illicit goods.
As a result of Taylor’s guilty plea, the FCI Danbury is taking steps to increase security measures and prevent similar incidents in the future.
