Philadelphia Woman Sentenced for Stealing Dead Father’s Social Security Benefits

Sophia Beltz, a 55-year-old woman from Philadelphia, has been sentenced to nine months in prison for stealing $172,133 in government funds from her dead father’s Social Security Administration Retirement Insurance Benefits. The scheme, which lasted over 15 years, involved Beltz collecting approximately 180 fraudulently obtained checks every month.

According to the U.S. District Court, Beltz’s father passed away in February 1997, but she continued to collect his Social Security benefits until August 2012, when her scheme was finally discovered. Beltz pleaded guilty to the charges on April 30, 2013.

U.S. District Court Judge Legrome D. Davis noted that Beltz’s actions were a severe breach of trust, and her sentence reflected the seriousness of the offense. In addition to the prison term, Beltz must pay restitution to the Social Security Administration in the amount of $172,133 and serve three years of supervised release following her prison term.

The case was investigated by the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General, and prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Amanda R. Reinitz. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania handled the case.
