Pittsburgh Man Sentenced for Crack Cocaine Conspiracy
A 28-year-old Pittsburgh man has been sentenced to time served with five years of supervised release for conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine, according to Acting United States Attorney Stephen R. Kaufman.
Senior United States District Judge Arthur J. Schwab imposed the sentence on Balon Kennedy, 28, of Pittsburgh, for his role in a conspiracy to distribute over 28 grams of crack cocaine in the West End of Pittsburgh.
According to information presented to the court, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration initiated a wiretap investigation in 2017, targeting the GBK street gang and drug trafficking in and around the Greenway Projects. The wiretap investigation revealed that from November 2017 through June 2018, Kennedy conspired to distribute crack cocaine.
Assistant United States Attorneys Tonya Sulia Goodman and Yvonne M. Saadi prosecuted this case on behalf of the government. Acting U.S. Attorney Kaufman commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and local law enforcement agencies for their work in bringing Kennedy to justice.
The prosecution is a result of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation, which identifies, disrupts, and dismantles high-level drug traffickers, money launderers, gangs, and transnational criminal organizations that threaten communities throughout the United States.
In imposing sentence, Senior Judge Schwab stated that the sentence was sufficient but not greater than necessary to achieve the goals of sentencing. Kennedy will serve five years of supervised release following his time served in prison.
The successful prosecution of Kennedy is a testament to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in Pittsburgh and beyond. The conviction sends a strong message to those involved in drug trafficking that they will be held accountable for their crimes.
