CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – Tara Ponceroff, a 26-year-old woman from Morgantown, West Virginia, will spend the next three decades behind bars for her role in a horrific child pornography operation. U.S. Attorney Bill Powell announced the sentence today, a grim reminder of the predators lurking in plain sight.
Ponceroff pled guilty in February 2019 to one count of “Aiding and Abetting Production of Child Pornography.” The investigation revealed that Ponceroff didn’t just stumble into this depravity; she actively produced and distributed images involving a minor within Monongalia County back in December 2017. Details of the production remain sealed, but sources confirm the images were widely disseminated online.
The 30-year sentence handed down by Senior U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley sends a message, though whether it’s enough remains to be seen. This wasn’t a passive act; Ponceroff knowingly participated in the exploitation of a vulnerable child, and the court recognized the severity of her actions. The sentence reflects the federal government’s commitment to aggressively prosecuting those who prey on children.
This case was brought forward as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative that aims to dismantle online child exploitation networks. The program, spearheaded by the United States Attorneys’ Offices, brings together federal, state, and local law enforcement to identify, apprehend, and prosecute offenders, and crucially, to rescue victims. It’s a never-ending battle, but one that authorities say they are determined to win.
Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Perri skillfully prosecuted the case, building a solid case against Ponceroff. The West Virginia State Police conducted the initial investigation, painstakingly piecing together the evidence that led to her conviction. Their work, along with the efforts of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, is a testament to the dedication of those fighting to protect the most vulnerable among us.
The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation. If you suspect child exploitation, report it immediately to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children or your local law enforcement agency. Silence enables these monsters.
