Kison Robertson, Attempted Murder, SD 2023

PORCUPINE, SD – Kison Robertson, 45, of Porcupine, South Dakota, is facing a potential life sentence after being indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of Attempted Murder, two counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, and Discharge of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime of Violence. The charges stem from a brazen shooting that occurred March 30, 2017, leaving one man seriously injured.

According to court documents, Robertson allegedly used a firearm to attempt to murder a male victim in Porcupine. The indictment further alleges he assaulted both the man and his son with the same weapon, resulting in significant bodily harm to the father. Details surrounding the motive for the attack remain scarce, but investigators are painting a picture of a violent confrontation.

United States Attorney Randolph J. Seiler announced the indictment on April 12, 2017. Robertson appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daneta Wollmann on April 14, 2017, and entered a plea of not guilty. He is currently remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, awaiting trial, which is scheduled for June 6, 2017.

If convicted on all counts, Robertson faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, as well as a potential $250,000 fine. In addition to incarceration and fines, the court could impose five years of supervised release and a $100 payment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution to the victim(s) may also be ordered by the judge.

The investigation into this violent incident was a joint effort led by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman is prosecuting the case, determined to see justice served for the victim and his family.

It is crucial to remember that these are merely accusations at this stage. Kison Robertson is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
