Portage County Man Charged with Child Exploitation
A Portage County man, 40, has been indicted on charges of sexual exploitation of a child and distributing child pornography, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Thomas D. Brown, of Atwater, Ohio, allegedly used, persuaded, enticed and coerced a minor to engage in sexually explicit conduct, resulting in the production of a visual depiction of such conduct, between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2015, and again from June 1, 2016, through May 22, 2017.
The indictment also charges that Brown knowingly received and distributed numerous computer files containing visual depictions of real minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, between May 4, 2017, and May 9, 2017. Additionally, on or about May 12, 2017, Brown possessed a computer, a Lexar flash drive and an SD card, each of which contained child pornography.
If convicted, Brown’s sentence will be determined by the Court after review of factors unique to this case, including his prior criminal record, if any, his role in the offense and the characteristics of the violation. In all cases, the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum, and in most cases, it will be less than the maximum.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael A. Sullivan and was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Canton Police Department.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
According to the indictment, Brown’s actions took place over a period of three years, with the most recent offenses occurring in 2016 and 2017.
