A 57-year-old Prairie View woman has been caught with her hands deep in the cookie jar, pleading guilty to embezzling a whopping $211,563.12 from elderly client accounts at Prairie View Federal Credit Union.
Gloria Hall, 57, was employed as the manager at Prairie View Federal Credit Union (PVFCU) from 2017 through 2019. But in a brazen move, Hall maintained an antiquated business practice that prevented customers from accessing their accounts online, giving her the perfect cover for her thieving ways.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Hall accessed at least two elderly customer accounts and misappropriated their funds for her own personal gain. The PVFCU, which was one of the oldest continually operational federal credit unions established by a historically black college or university, ultimately failed due to Hall’s embezzlement.
The credit union, which had been in operation for approximately 85 years, merged with the Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union in early 2022. The consequences of Hall’s actions were severe, leaving a trail of devastation in her wake.
“Hall’s personal greed trumped the needs of her community,” said U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani. “These banks often form the bedrock of our society, and their failures can have devastating impacts on the people that rely on them. Her actions had severe consequences, actions that deserve a harsh yet just punishment.”
U.S. District Judge Charles Eskridge accepted Hall’s plea and set sentencing for August 22. The 57-year-old faces up to 30 years in federal prison and a possible $1 million maximum fine. Hall was permitted to remain on bond pending sentencing.
The FBI – Bryan Resident Agency conducted the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Grace Murphy and Thomas Carter are prosecuting the case. The details of Hall’s embezzlement scandal are a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of financial crimes and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable.
In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized the severity of Hall’s actions and the need for a harsh yet just punishment. The office vowed to continue investigating and prosecuting financial crimes that harm vulnerable communities.
