Ahmed Hussain, UI Fraud, Gun Possession, Maryland 2024

Greenbelt, Maryland – In a grim tale of crime and corruption, Ahmed Hussain, 23, from Prince George’s County, has been sentenced to 102 months in federal prison for a trio of monstrous crimes: unemployment insurance fraud, firearm possession, and drug trafficking.

Hussain was also sentenced to three years of supervised release following his conviction on conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft charges. The sentence includes restitution of $557,078. This conviction stems from Hussain’s fraudulent submission of CARES Act unemployment insurance claims, which he used to obtain over $550,000.

According to the plea agreement, from 2021 until at least September 2022, Hussain and his co-conspirators orchestrated a scheme to defraud the United States and Maryland state agencies. They submitted false UI benefits claims, leading to losses exceeding $3.5 million. The defendants exploited access to sensitive data through Company 1, a service provider for the Maryland Department of Labor.

Not content with financial crimes alone, Hussain also admitted to possessing a stolen handgun while involved in drug trafficking activities. During a search warrant execution, authorities found 60 pounds of marijuana, drug bags, and a cache of ammunition in his possession. His prior convictions made him prohibited from owning firearms.

Kelly O. Hayes, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, announced the sentence alongside law enforcement agencies such as the Department of Labor – Office of Inspector General, ATF, FBI, and Prince George’s County Police Department. The court’s decision sends a stern message to those who attempt to exploit the system with violent intent.

Hussain’s co-conspirators, Bryan Nushawn Ruffin and Kiara Smith, are also facing charges in this organized crime ring that sought to defraud the government and citizens alike.
