PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A Providence gang member has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for possessing a loaded 9mm handgun after being convicted of a domestic violence charge. Nimera Seng, 31, a member of the Providence Street Boyz, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge John J. McConnell, Jr. who also ordered Seng to serve 3 years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term.
Seng pleaded guilty on April 15, 2013 to one count of possession of a firearm by an individual convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. The charge stems from a September 12, 2012 court-authorized search of Seng’s residence by Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agents and Providence Police, which resulted in the seizure of a 9mm handgun loaded with 17 rounds of ammunition.
According to information presented to the court, Seng admitted to owning the firearm, which was discovered stashed in a bedroom bureau, and told police he purchased the gun on the street for $600 for protection. The residence had previously been shot at on multiple occasions, and multiple firearms had been seized from the residence in the past.
Seng’s history of violence includes a 2005 conviction for domestic assault. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Milind M. Shah.
‘This sentence sends a strong message that those who possess firearms, especially those with a history of violence, will be held accountable for their actions,’ said United States Attorney Peter F. Neronha. ‘The Providence Police Department and ATF deserve credit for their tireless efforts in keeping our community safe.’
‘This sentence is a testament to the dedication of the Providence Police Department, the ATF, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in keeping our community safe from violent crime,’ said Providence Police Chief Colonel Hugh T. Clements, Jr..
The case was investigated by the Providence Police Department and the ATF, and was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Rhode Island.
