Fort Myers, Florida – In a stunning turn of events, Eric David Erdmann, a 44-year-old man from Punta Gorda, has been found guilty by a federal jury for failing to register as a sex offender. The court date for Erdmann’s sentencing is set for May 22, 2017, where he could face up to ten years in federal prison.
Erdmann was required to register as a sex offender after his conviction on July 13, 2010, for a sex offense in Oregon. He initially registered, but then fled the country, heading to Cambodia, where he attempted to start anew. Oregon authorities issued a warrant for his arrest in December 2010.
On April 8, 2016, Erdmann was served with notice at the U.S. Embassy in Phenom Penh, Cambodia, that his passport would be revoked due to the outstanding warrant. Two weeks later, Cambodian authorities apprehended him for being in the country illegally. Erdmann agreed to leave Cambodia and landed back in Florida on April 28, 2016, where he settled in Lee County but failed to register as a sex offender.
This case has been meticulously investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Michael C. Baggé-Hernández is handling the prosecution.
Erdmann’s conviction marks a significant victory for law enforcement agencies in their ongoing battle against sex offender registry violations. It serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who attempt to evade justice and re-enter the United States without compliance with the legal system.
