Tampa, FL – In a chilling display of disrespect for public servants, Quentin Cephus (30) has been sentenced to three years and five months in federal prison after he launched a physical attack on a U.S. Bureau of Prisons official during an audit at the Hillsborough County Residential Re-entry Center.
Cephus, whose actions have landed him behind bars for more than three years, pleaded guilty to forcibly assaulting and inflicting bodily injury on a federal official while that employee was conducting his duties. The judge’s decision came down yesterday, marking the culmination of what has been a swift and severe legal response to Cephus’ violent behavior.
The incident occurred on February 9, 2016, when Cephus, who was a resident at the center, approached the federal official with malice in his heart. With a closed fist, he struck the official in the face, leaving him with injuries that required medical attention. The assault did not end there; moments later, Cephus spat in the face of the injured officer, adding insult to injury.
Cephus’ actions were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Kaitlin R. O’Donnell and Mandy Riedel. The swift legal action taken against him demonstrates the justice system’s zero-tolerance stance on violence against federal employees.
U.S. District Judge Virginia Covington handed down the sentence, reflecting the gravity of Cephus’ crime and the impact it had on the victim. This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who choose to threaten or harm public servants in the line of duty.
Cephus will now serve his time, hoping for redemption that may seem as elusive as the justice he denied to the federal official whose life was forever altered by this brutal attack.
