Grimy Times Exclusive: Burglar Targets Asian Homeowners

A Union County, New Jersey man has admitted his role in a conspiracy that targeted Asian and Asian-American homeowners for residential burglaries. Randi Barr, 41, of Vauxhall, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property.

According to documents filed in the case, from December 2, 2016, to March 20, 2019, Barr and others participated in a conspiracy to burglarize the residences of certain Asian small business owners living in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The stolen goods were then transported in interstate commerce, including to Barr’s residences in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The charge of conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property carries a maximum potential penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, or twice the amount of money involved in the offense, whichever is greater. Sentencing is scheduled for April 25, 2023.

U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger credited FBI Newark’s Transnational Organized Crime Task Force, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge James E. Dennehy, in Newark, with the investigation leading to today’s guilty plea. He also thanked numerous law enforcement agencies for their assistance in the case.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between multiple law enforcement agencies, including the South Plainfield Police Department, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, the New Jersey State Police, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of State, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, and numerous local police departments.

The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Dong Joo Lee of the U.S. Attorney’s Office OCDETF/Narcotics Unit in Newark.
