NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – A New Orleans man has been sentenced to 125 months imprisonment for his role in a fentanyl trafficking operation.
RANDY FIELDS, 46, of Orleans Parish, was sentenced on January 17, 2023 by U.S. District Court Judge Jay C. Zainey to a combined total of 125 months imprisonment, 4 years of supervised release, and a $400 mandatory special assessment fee.
According to court documents, FIELDS was charged with four counts of a four-count indictment, including possession with the intent to distribute 40 or more grams of fentanyl, possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possessing a machine gun.
The charges stemmed from an incident on March 31, 2021, when the New Orleans Police Department responded to a shooting in the 1800 block of Touro Street in New Orleans, LA. Officers discovered FIELDS suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and found a firearm equipped with a Glock-switch device, allowing it to be turned into a fully automatic weapon. Additionally, officers located approximately 100 grams of fentanyl in FIELDS’s shirt.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department in bringing the case to justice. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Inga Petrovich of the Violent Crime Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
FIELDS was sentenced to a combined total of 125 months imprisonment, 4 years of supervised release, and a $400 mandatory special assessment fee. The charges against FIELDS include:
- Count 1: Possession with the intent to distribute 40 or more grams of fentanyl (21 U.S.C. § 841(a)(1) and (b)(1)(B)(vi))
- Count 2: Possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense (18 U.S.C. § 924(c)(1))
- Count 3: Being a felon in possession of a firearm (18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(2))
- Count 4: Possessing a machine gun (18 U.S.C. § 922(o) and 924(a)(2))
This case is part of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s commitment to reducing violent crime and gun violence in the community. The New Orleans Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation worked together to bring this case to justice.
