Rapid City Man Sentenced for Illegally Possessing Firearm
Brendan V. Johnson, United States Attorney, announced that Daniel Thomas, age 31, of Rapid City, South Dakota, was sentenced to 46 months of imprisonment for Felon in Possession of a Firearm. On August 14, 2013, Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court, handed down the sentence.
According to court documents, Thomas was prohibited from possessing firearms based on previous felony convictions, including possession of heroin, manufacturing or delivering a controlled substance, and taking a motor vehicle without permission.
On July 23, 2012, Thomas went to a residence in Red Shirt, South Dakota, with a .38 caliber Colt Cobra revolver. When the person in the house got to the door, Thomas displayed the gun in his hand and asked where his “stuff” was. He also kicked another individual and pointed the gun at that person.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
As part of his sentence, Thomas was also ordered to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and serve 2 years of supervised release.
Thomas’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and put innocent lives at risk. We are committed to keeping our communities safe and will continue to work tirelessly to prosecute those who engage in such reckless behavior.
