Terrance Drapeaux, Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, California 2023

United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell revealed today that Terrance Drapeaux, a 31-year-old man from Rapid City, South Dakota, has been sentenced to one year and three months in federal prison for the illegal possession of a firearm.

Drapeaux was convicted on charges of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person and Receipt of a Firearm while Under Indictment. The sentencing was handed down by U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler on August 7, 2025.

Prior to his sentence, Drapeaux had been found in possession of a firearm during an arrest attempt on December 4, 2024, when he also resisted law enforcement. His resistance led to the discovery of the firearm, hidden in his pocket. The defendant was already charged with a felony offense at the time of his arrest, making it illegal for him to possess a firearm.

This conviction comes under Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative targeting illegal immigration, the elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and reducing gun violence across communities. The effort involves collaboration between various law enforcement agencies, including ATF, Rapid City Police, and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.

The sentence includes three years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Schroeder was responsible for prosecuting the case, which has been remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
