Rasheed Smith, a 32-year-old resident of Marrero, Louisiana, has been federally indicted for illegal possession of a firearm, announced U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans.
Smith faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 15 years, up to a $250,000 fine, up to 3 years of supervised release, and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100 if convicted of the charges.
U.S. Attorney Evans emphasized that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities.
Project Safe Neighborhoods brings together law enforcement agencies and community organizations to foster trust and legitimacy, prevent violence, and make neighborhoods safer.
The case was investigated by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant United States Attorney Greg Kennedy leading the prosecution.
Evans reiterated that the program is committed to making communities safer and reducing violent crime, and this case is a testament to that commitment.
