Ravenna Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Crack Cocaine and Firearms Convictions
Darnell C. Butcher, 50, of Ravenna has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition and possessing with intent to distribute crack cocaine, said U.S. Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach for the Northern District of Ohio.
According to court documents, Butcher was found guilty of the crimes following a jury trial before U.S. District Judge Christopher Boyko. This conviction marks a significant blow to the community, and this lengthy sentence will undoubtedly bring a sense of relief to the residents of Ravenna.
Butcher’s crimes were committed on or about April 8, 2011, when he possessed a Tanfoglio Giuseppe, model GT32, .32 caliber pistol; a Ruger, model Mark II, .22 caliber pistol; an RG Industries, model RGI, .22 caliber pistol; and ammunition, despite previous convictions for possession of cocaine and trafficking in cocaine, in the Court of Common Pleas of Portage County, Ohio.
On the same day, Butcher possessed with the intent to distribute approximately 12.1 grams of crack cocaine, according to court documents and testimony. This significant quantity of crack cocaine is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of the opioid epidemic on our communities.
The investigation of this case was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – Youngstown Field Office, the Ravenna Police Department and the Metro SWAT Team. The matter was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kelly Galvin and Chelsea Rice.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio commends the law enforcement agencies involved in this case for their diligent efforts in bringing Butcher to justice. This sentence serves as a strong deterrent to others who would engage in similar crimes and undermines the efforts to dismantle the opioid trade in our communities.
The investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrates the commitment of the U.S. Attorney’s Office to hold accountable those who engage in violent and narcotics-related crimes that imperil our citizens.
