Crack Cocaine Trafficking Rocks Wheeling Neighborhoods
A federal crackdown on crack cocaine trafficking has led to the sentencing of five men from Wheeling, West Virginia. According to court documents, the men were involved in a large-scale distribution operation that spanned several months.
The defendants, who range in age from 22 to 39, were charged with various crimes related to the distribution of crack cocaine. Deon Young, 27, and Carlos Moore, 27, were sentenced to 108 and 42 months in prison, respectively, for their roles in a conspiracy to distribute cocaine base and heroin from November 2012 to January 2013.
The court also ordered the forfeiture of $2,260 from Young and $1,541 from Moore. Young and Moore were remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal pending designation to a Federal institution.
Devon Bertram, 24, entered a guilty plea to distributing crack cocaine within 1,000 feet of Wheeling Central Catholic High School. He faces up to 40 years in prison and is currently in custody pending sentencing.
Gary Moe Wade, 39, also entered a guilty plea to aiding and abetting the distribution of crack cocaine within 1,000 feet of Wheeling Central Catholic High School. Wade faces up to 40 years in prison.
In a separate matter, Jerome Melvin Ross, 22, entered a guilty plea to distributing crack cocaine within 1,000 feet of Riverview Towers. He also faces up to 40 years in prison.
The cases were prosecuted by U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Randolph J. Bernard. The Ohio Valley Drug Task Force, comprised of officers and agents from the West Virginia State Police-BCI, the Wheeling Police Department, the Ohio County Sheriff’s Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration, investigated the cases.
