Convicted Sex Offender Sentenced to 30 Months in Federal Prison
ALBUQUERQUE – In a disturbing case of child abuse, Raylon Castillo, a 20-year-old enrolled member of the Jicarilla Apache Nation, has been sentenced to serve 30 months in federal prison for his conviction of statutory rape.
The crime occurred on July 25, 2014, when Castillo engaged in a sexual act with a 14-year-old Native American minor on the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation in Otero County, New Mexico. Castillo was at least four years older than the victim, making the act a statutory rape under federal law.
Castillo was arrested on December 18, 2014, on a federal complaint charging him with the crime. He had previously been arrested on tribal charges on July 25, 2014, and remained in tribal custody until his federal arrest.
On May 20, 2015, Castillo was indicted on charges of sexual abuse of a minor. He pleaded guilty to the indictment on July 1, 2015, admitting to the crime and its circumstances.
As part of his sentence, Castillo will be required to register as a sex offender upon completion of his prison term. This serves as a warning to the community that those who commit such heinous crimes will be held accountable and face the consequences of their actions.
The case was investigated by the Las Cruces office of the FBI and the Mescalero Agency of the BIA’s Office of Justice Services. The U.S. Attorney’s Las Cruces Branch Office, under the direction of Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron O. Jordan, prosecuted the case as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
