Raymundo Gutierrez-Lagunas Sentenced in Iowa for Illegally Reentering the United States
A 35-year-old Mexican man has been sentenced to prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported.
Raymundo Gutierrez-Lagunas, a citizen of Mexico illegally present in the United States and residing in Linn County, Iowa, received a two-month prison term after pleading guilty to one count of illegal reentry into the United States after having been deported.
Gutierrez-Lagunas admitted that he had previously been deported from the United States and had illegally reentered the country without the permission of the United States government. He was previously deported in November 2013.
On December 3, 2022, immigration officials learned that Gutierrez-Lagunas had illegally returned to the United States and found him at the Linn County Jail following his arrest on state charges.
Gutierrez-Lagunas was sentenced to 80 days imprisonment and must also serve a one-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
He is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be turned over to immigration officials. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt and investigated by the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations.
