Kayne Russell Donath, 23, Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison for Illegally Possessing a Firearm in Iowa
A 23-year-old man from Illinois was sentenced to over seven years in prison for illegally possessing a firearm in Iowa. Kayne Russell Donath, from East Dubuque, Illinois, was convicted of possession of a firearm by a felon.
On April 17, 2023, U.S. District Court Judge C.J. Williams sentenced Donath to 90 months’ imprisonment, followed by a three-year term of supervised release. Donath had previously committed assaults against law enforcement and another individual, according to court documents.
The case began when Donath was pulled over by law enforcement after he revealed his possession of a firearm during a ride-sharing service. He then forced the individual to elude law enforcement, assaulted the individual with the firearm during a high-speed chase, and discarded the firearm in a nearby alley.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Dorval Norwood and was investigated by the City of Dubuque Police Department’s Drug Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. The program brings together law enforcement and community organizations to foster trust and legitimacy in neighborhoods.
Donath remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshal until he can be transported to federal prison. The case file number is 22-CR-1028, and more information can be found at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl. Follow us on Twitter @USAO_NDIA.
