Red Lake Man Sentenced to 37 Months in Prison for Violent Stabbing

A 24-year-old Red Lake man has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for a violent assault committed on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.

HAROLD JAMES JOHNSON, JR., an enrolled member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians, pleaded guilty to the crime on December 22, 2016, and was sentenced on May 10, 2017, before Senior Judge Michael J. Davis in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis, Minn.

According to the defendant’s guilty plea and documents filed in court, on July 10, 2016, JOHNSON assaulted a male victim at a private residence within the exterior boundaries of the Red Lake Indian Reservation. JOHNSON used a knife to stab the victim several times in the face and torso.

The victim suffered nearly fatal stab wounds and internal bleeding as well as surgery and extended hospitalization as a result of the attack.

The case resulted from an investigation conducted by the Red Lake Tribal Police Department and the FBI Headwaters Safe Trails Task Force. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Clifford B. Wardlaw.

In addition to the prison sentence, JOHNSON was also sentenced to three years of supervised release.

The Red Lake Indian Reservation is a federally recognized Indian reservation located in northern Minnesota. The Justice Department’s Tribal Safety program works to improve safety on Indian reservations and in Indian communities.
