Heroin Trafficking Lands Tangipahoa Parish Man Behind Bars

New Orleans, LA – In a shocking turn of events, 53-year-old Redis McGary, a resident of Tangipahoa Parish, has been sentenced to 64 months of imprisonment for violating the Federal Controlled Substances Act and The Gun Control Acts.

According to court documents, McGary pleaded guilty to a two-count Bill of Information on October 7, 2020 for possessing with the intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin and for being a convicted felon in possession of firearms.

The charges against McGary stem from his possession of a .38 special/357 Mag Derringer pistol and a .22 caliber Derringer pistol, which he had previously been convicted of a felony offense punishable by more than 1 year of imprisonment in the Tangipahoa Parish Criminal District Court.

For Count One, Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle sentenced McGary to 64 months of imprisonment, 4 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment. For Count Two, Judge Lemelle sentenced McGary to 64 months of imprisonment, 3 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment. Both sentences are to be served concurrently.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Hammond Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Bayonle Osundare was in charge of the prosecution.

McGary’s sentencing marks a significant victory in the fight against heroin trafficking and gun violence in Louisiana. The harsh penalties handed down by Judge Lemelle serve as a warning to those who would engage in similar activities.
