HOUSTON – Abdulrahman Mohammed Hafedh Alqaysi, a 28-year-old former Iraqi refugee and legal permanent resident of Richmond, has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for providing material support to ISIS. This sentence comes after Alqaysi pleaded guilty on March 7 for his role in aiding the terrorist organization.
U.S. District Judge Alfred Bennett ordered Alqaysi to serve 144 months behind bars followed by three years of supervised release, emphasizing the severity of the offense and its impact on both Americans and the international community. The court also noted that Alqaysi is expected to lose his immigration status in the United States.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei said, ‘The American people generously allowed Alqaysi to live in the United States, but he betrayed that hospitality by helping ISIS, an organization responsible for the murder of Americans and countless innocent lives.’
From 2015 to 2020, Alqaysi provided his computer expertise to develop logos for the Kalachnikov team, a media arm of ISIS. He also sent hacking videos, instructions, stolen credit card information, and falsified identity documents to members of the terrorist organization.
The investigation into Alqaysi was conducted by the FBI Houston Joint Terrorism Task Force with assistance from Immigration Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Heather Winter and National Security Division Trial Attorney Michael Dittoe prosecuted the case.
Alqaysi will remain in custody pending transfer to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility as determined in the near future.
