Larry Malmay, Meth & Firearms, Zwolle LA, 2024

ZWOLLE, Louisiana – Larry Maurice Malmay, 47, is headed to federal prison for over a decade after a routine probation check exploded into a desperate flight and the discovery of a drug stash and illegal firearms. Malmay was sentenced Monday to 182 months (15 years, 2 months) followed by 5 years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge S. Maurice Hicks, Jr., after being convicted of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking.

The trouble began December 28, 2022, when officers with Louisiana Probation and Parole paid a visit to Malmay’s Zwolle residence. Already on probation for prior felony convictions, Malmay quickly raised red flags. The pungent smell of marijuana hit the officer the moment the door opened. When asked about prohibited items, Malmay admitted to having two guns. As the officer moved to handcuff him, Malmay bolted, initiating a frantic chase.

Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies were called in to help track down the fleeing felon. While they searched, the probation officer conducted a sweep of Malmay’s house, uncovering a cache of illegal substances and weaponry. Authorities found a Ruger EC9S 9mm pistol, a Remington 410 gauge shotgun, 17 grams of methamphetamine, 74 grams of marijuana packaged for street sales, and a staggering 90+ narcotic pills. Also present were plastic baggies for packaging and scales, indicating a clear intent to distribute.

The K-9 unit of the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office eventually located Malmay passed out in the woods. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, where he confessed to consuming over 100 hydrocodone pills in a desperate attempt to hide them from law enforcement. He further admitted to stashing over two pounds of methamphetamine for an unknown accomplice at various times. Malmay, with a lengthy criminal history, was well aware he was legally barred from possessing any firearms or ammunition.

“This case demonstrates the dangers posed by individuals who illegally possess firearms while engaged in drug trafficking,” stated U.S. Attorney Brandon B. Brown. “Our office will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to prosecute these offenders and keep our communities safe.” The investigation was a joint effort by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Louisiana Probation and Parole, and the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Assistant United States Attorney Robert F. Moody handled the prosecution. Malmay’s case is a stark reminder that evading law enforcement and continuing criminal activity despite a prior record will result in serious federal consequences. The 182-month sentence sends a clear message: illegal drug trafficking and firearm possession will not be tolerated in the Western District of Louisiana.
