LITTLE ROCK, AR – Christopher Grays, 25, of West Memphis, is heading back to federal prison after receiving a 10-year sentence today for his second federal conviction as a felon in possession of firearms. U.S. District Judge James M. Moody, Jr. handed down the 120-month sentence, a significant departure from recommended guidelines, signaling the court’s clear message: Grays’ pattern of violence won’t be tolerated.
The case stems from an incident on February 28, 2024, where West Memphis Police responded to a call regarding a woman allegedly being held against her will at a local hotel. Upon arrival, officers encountered Grays, who was found to be in possession of multiple guns. Witnesses testified in court that Grays actively resisted arrest, kicking several officers in the process. The scene quickly escalated, revealing a dangerous individual with a history of disregard for the law.
A search of the hotel room revealed two firearms hidden inside the toilet tank, one of which was loaded with ammunition matching that found in an extended magazine visibly protruding from Grays’ back pocket. This wasn’t Grays’ first rodeo. Judge Moody previously sentenced him to 46 months in federal prison in November 2020 on the same charge – being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was released just four months prior to the February 2024 incident, while still on supervised release.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Moody reviewed a disturbing pattern of alleged violence associated with Grays, dating back to his juvenile years. Police reports spanning 2015-2020 detailed Grays’ involvement in over 17 incidents, with the vast majority involving violent conduct. The judge clearly considered this lengthy history of aggression when imposing the substantial sentence, exceeding the standard sentencing range.
“This isn’t just about a gun,” stated a source close to the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity. “This is about a man who repeatedly puts the community at risk. He’s been given chances, and he’s squandered them. The judge sent a strong message today that this behavior will not be tolerated.” The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the West Memphis Police Department jointly investigated the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Givens prosecuted the case. Grays will serve his 10-year sentence without the possibility of parole, followed by three years of supervised release. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Arkansas continues to prioritize cases involving violent offenders and illegal firearms.
